Valentine's day

So today is Valentine’s Day and if like me you have no plans and your annoying coupled up friends have been harassing you with variations of the viral “where is your boyfriend/girlfriend” song then by all means welcome.

My day will be spent at my desk at work with no plans for the evening except curling up in bed and catching up on shows, hanging out with Kiki and no bae with surprise plans up his sleeves.

I spoke to a few friends and they shared their thoughts on Valentine’s and plans they may or may not have and best believe I’ll be living vicariously through them. The ones that have plans anyways, lol.

Meet Marvela

THE GORGEOUS MARVELA

Hey! My name is Marvey

T: Would you consider yourself a romantic?

M: In a weird and non orthodox way, I would say I’m romantic.

T: Have you ever celebrated Valentine’s? If so, what did you do?

M: No

T: Are you in a romantic relationship or situationships?

M: I just got out of one.

T: What are your plans for this Valentine’s Day ?

M: Me, my bed, Netflix and a bottle of Stella Rosa Red.

T:  Ideal Valentine’s date?

M: Me and him in a Louis Vuitton store.. just joking (not really). Okay a more socially appropriate answer, a fancy dinner.

T: Valentine; Cliche or Special?

M: Hmm, I think it’s a bit cliche. Picking one day to celebrate love is unromantic. Plus I think people should pick out their individual Valentine’s Day because generic doesn’t always work for everyone.

T: Gift ideas for Valentine?

M: Something sentimental to both of you.

T: Cupid’s arrow: weapon of mass destruction or instrument of love?

M: I think it’s a double edged sword.

Meet  Suwa

THE TIMELESSLY BEAUTIFUL SOON TO BE DR. SUWA

My name is Adesuwa Osazuwa. I am a final medical student in the College of Medicine, University of Lagos. A young lady from Edo state, the first of three awesome children.

I think I am a cool person. Lol! I enjoy visiting new places, cooking and making videos.

T: Would you consider yourself a romantic?

A: Hmmn, I absolutely looooovvvee anything romance. I am a sucker for love but sometimes I am not the romantic being. Ironic right? Yeah!

T: Have you ever celebrated Valentine’s? If yes, what did you do?

A: This question is quite tricky. Yeah, last year but I don’t know if I should say I celebrated it because I was surprised and I wasn’t expecting it at all.

Last year, my partner and I had talked about it, we are both not so crazy about Valentine’s day so we were on the same page. I was preparing for my 5th year professional exam, not expecting anything and facing my books as a serious student that I am.

Apparently, he had gotten me gifts. We had a misunderstanding earlier in the day, little did I know he had planned with my roommate to help deliver the gifts. He came to my school without informing me, we had settled the fight and I went to my room to meet my package on my bed.

I got a lovely dinner dress, hand written notes (I love them a lot) and a box of pizza with my 2 best flavours to cool my nerves after studying. Lol!

It was a really pleasant surprise.🤭

(T. we too go love o)

T: Are you in a romantic relationship or situationships?

A: Yes I am in a relationship with an amazing gentleman ❤️

T: What are your plans for this Valentine’s Day ?

A: Lol!  No plans.

(T: who knows she might just get a surprise this year as well 😉)

T: Ideal Valentine date?

A: An ideal date would be with the person I love, good scenery /environment and FOOD! The three constants, every other thing is a variable.

T: Valentine; Cliche or Special?

A: Valentine! Very indifferent honestly.

T: Gift ideas for Valentine?

A:  This depends on your partner or significant other’s likes / want, can range from a car to lovely handwritten notes. Nothing is too little honestly.

T: Cupid’s arrow: weapon of mass destruction or instrument of love?

A: Cupid’s Arrow is both abeg 😂😂.  It can go both ways.

Meet Ruth

THE BEAUTIFUL RUTH

My name is Ruth Woke .

T: Would you consider yourself a romantic?

R: I guess I would consider myself a realistic romantic. I spent a lot of time reading romantic novels when I was younger and was a strong believer in the Prince Charming on a white horse trope. But as I’ve grown older, a lot of realism has helped me see no 2-D Prince Charming that exists only to save me is possible and to look for more lasting virtues than pretty boy looks and a tall figure. I still believe in the beauty of love so I guess underneath all that I’m still a romantic.

T: Have you ever celebrated Valentine’s? If so, what did you do?

R: I’ve observed it once before with an ex flame in secondary school. He bought me a beaded jewelry set and that was that. I’m excited for this year because it’ll be my first one with my  boyfriend.

RUTH AND HER BOOTHANG

T: Are you in a romantic relationship or situationships?

R: Yes I’m very much in a romantic relationship right now.

T: What are your plans for this Valentine’s Day ?

R: I plan to celebrate it the day after because that’s my boyfriend’s birthday.  We would have cake, spend the day together and watch a movie. Very simple but I like it.

(T. here, can we all collectively ‘awwwww’)

T: Ideal Valentine date?

R: A baecation to a nice location would be awesome

T: Valentine; Cliche or Special?

R: I think Valentine is special like birthdays and anniversaries. They can be useful in reminding us why we fell in love at first and that we shouldn’t let that love die.

T: Gift ideas for Valentine?

R: I think gift ideas would vary according to your budget and what your partner likes. Some people may prefer experiences so organizing a trip even somewhere local would be very appreciated while others may prefer material things so clothes or a watch would be more appreciated.

T: Cupid’s arrow: weapon of mass destruction or instrument of love?

R: I don’t believe in a love at first sight existing. So in that sense Cupid’s arrow doesn’t have meaning to me. But I guess it’s an instrument of love to some.

Meet Seyi

My name is Seyitan Moritiwon and I’m a student.

S: I definitely consider myself a romantic the only problem is I don’t have anyone to express the romanticism with 😊

T: Have you ever celebrated Valentine’s? If so, what did you do?

SEYI, THE HAPPY BABY GIRL

S: In my twenty something years of life, I’ve never celebrated Val’s day. But one of my “boyfriends” then took my friend and I to a shopping centre on Val’s day when we were much younger. I don’t know if that’s a celebration of Val’s day but I don’t consider it as one.

T: Are you in a romantic relationship or situationships?

S: No romantic relationship o 🥺🥺

T: What are your plans for this Valentine’s Day ?

S: I’m finishing my workshop this Friday, so I’m excited about that. I’ll be Netflixing and chilling with myself 😻😻

T: Ideal Valentine date?

S: Ideal Val’s date will be my partner and I cooking and having an intimate candle lit dinner at home and Netflix and chill afterwards

T: Valentine; Cliche or Special?

S: Special but borderline cliche. Almost like birthdays.

T: Gift ideas for Valentine

S: Natural hair products hehe! Lol I don’t really know. But I’ll need my partner to know what I like and I’ll also need to know what he likes to make a decision.

T: Cupid’s arrow: weapon of mass destruction or instrument of love?

S: I don’t believe in Cupid’s arrow but I guess you’ll start expressing love when you get shot by a Cupid’s arrow.  It could be a weapon of destruction if you weren’t interested in loving that person though🤣

Meet Oge

OGE IN ALL HER VALENTINE FLOURISH

Hi, my name is Oge. I’m from Imo, Owerri. Graduate of the University of Portharcourt, serving in Abuja with two siblings.

T: Would you consider yourself a romantic?

O: No, I don’t think so. Between my boyfriend and everybody else that knows me, they will collectively say I’m not  a romantic person.

T: Have you ever celebrated Valentine’s? If so, what did you do?

O: I don’t remember ever celebrating Valentine’s Day with someone from the opposite sex or anyone I was in a relationship with. I’ve always just hung out with my girl friends if at all. I had hoped this year would be different but bae is out of town so…

T: Are you in a romantic relationship or situationships ?

O: First of all what is a situationship ? And yes I’m in a very serious, healthy romantic relationship.

T: What are your plans for this Valentine’s Day ?

O: I’m out of town for my childhood friend’s wedding which is actually on Valentines Day so that’s my plan for the day. Bae said he’ll send my gifts so I’m excited for that.

T: Ideal Valentine’s date?

O: My boyfriend being around and us spending time together.

T: Valentine; Cliche or Special?

O: I think it’s special. It’s a time to share and receive love.

T: Gift ideas for Valentine?

O: I’m not into all those lovey dovey flowers and what not. I like apple products so I would love to get some but then it’s the person’s choice and pocket. Money is also very okay for me. A bouquet of dollars would be very ideal.

T: Cupid’s arrow: weapon of mass destruction or instrument of love?

O: Definitely an instrument of love. Show love to whoever is dear to your heart. I’m going to be showing my lover some good old loving

Tari here; I guess there’s a little bit of mixed emotions about Valentine from their statements. I guess in as much as it’s a day marked out for love and by extension for lovers. Valentine’s Day is more than a capitalist holiday and we should have fun whether or not we are in relationships. So, spread joy and love everyday and to everyone you come across.

What do you think of Valentines and how are you celebrating?
